MLB 2023 | Gurriel was a homer shy of cycle, Iglesias locks down seventh save, Yandy with two hits
Major League Baseball (MLB) and other Cuban Players News for the 2023 season. A compendium from several sources
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Homer shy of cycle. Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 7-5 victory over the Athletics. Gurriel's leadoff triple in the fourth inning was his third three-bagger this year, setting a new career high in his age-39 season. He's gone 6-for-13 in his last three games following an 0-for-13 slump. Gurriel's now slashing .291/.350/.440 with three homers, 15 runs scored, 13 RBI and three stolen bases through 157 at-bats in his first season with Miami.
Raisel Iglesias slammed the door on the Diamondbacks on Sunday, working a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
Iglesias was unexpectedly thrust into action after Eddie Rosario blasted a go-ahead grand slam with two outs in the top half of the ninth inning. Iglesias then came on and issued a leadoff walk to Ketel Marte, but got Corbin Carroll to ground into a double play before getting Christian Walker on a bouncer to third base to end the game. On the season, the 33-year-old hurler now holds a 3.09 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and an 11/6 K/BB ratio across his first 11 2/3 innings.
Yandy Díaz with two hits on Sunday against the Red Sox. Díaz went 2-for-5 with a run scored, an RBI, and two strikeouts Sunday against the Red Sox. Díaz occupied his customary spot atop the Rays' lineup and collected a RBI single in the sixth inning. Prior to this weekend, Díaz had been in a moderate slump, as he had gone just 5-for-25 across his last six games. That hasn't spoiled his breakout season, as he's only two home runs away from matching his career-best mark in a single season. The Cuban infielder is slashing an excellent .312/.405/.571 with 12 homers, 34 RBI and an marvelous 6.88 K%.
Aroldis Chapman returned to the mound Sunday and pitched a perfect inning for a hold.
Chapman recorded his seventh hold of the year as he returned to the mound. He struck out two of the three batters he faced and threw only 10 pitches, eight of which were strikes. Due to a sore knee, Chapman was unavailable for a couple of days. He has two saves in 23 games with a 2.95 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 21.1 innings as a setup man for closer Scott Barlow.
Adolis García leads MLB in RBIs despite injury scare
During Sunday's series finale at Globe Life Field, Texas Rangers right fielder Adolis García appeared to tweak his right knee in the second inning. Before returning to the game, García stretched and jogged a little and seems fine after the incident chasing a ball. When the club's home run and RBI leader looked normal, the entire Texas organization breathed a sigh of relief. This season, García has missed only two games. In the third inning García returned to right field. In the bottom of the inning, he doubled (#10) to straight-away center, scoring Nathaniel Lowe. García went 2-for-5 in the game with his RBI#51 of the year, leading all MLB together with his compatriot Yordan Álvarez.
Aledmis Díaz was hitless against the Marlins on Sunday.
Díaz has been struggling this season and is having trouble holding down a regular spot in the A's lineup. In a 7-5 loss to the Marlins, he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Díaz may be released by Oakland in a near future, after slashing .179/.234/.231 with a homer and eight RBI in 41 games and 145 PA.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Nestor Cortes will likely head to the injured list with a shoulder injury.
Cortes has been having trouble with his recovery in-between starts, so the Yankees are having him undergo an MRI exam on Monday to see exactly what's going on there. The club is hopeful that he'll only have to miss one or two starts -- but that remains to be seen. It's unclear how the Yankees plan to fill his spot in the rotation for the time being.
Jorge Soler was not in the Marlins' starting lineup for Sunday's contest against the A's.
It was a regular day off for the 31-year-old slugger. However, he had one AB, as a pinch hitter, and went 0-for-1 with a strikeout. Soler should return to the Marlins' lineup when they face the Royals at home on Monday.
Padres' Adrian Morejón is expected to be out until June 8
He joined Low-A Lake Elsinore for a rehab assignment two weeks ago and is expected to keep working his way back to the Padres bullpen.
Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Not in Sunday's lineup. Gurriel was removed from the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reported. The 29-year-old was initially slated to serve as the designated hitter Sunday, but he was instead a late scratch with Christian Walker cleared to return after sitting out Saturday with food poisoning. Gurriel started the previous nine games and figures to be back in the lineup Tuesday in Washington.
José Abreu was not in the Astros' starting lineup Sunday versus the Angels.
It was also a scheduled day off for the veteran first baseman. Abreu has disappointed fans this season, who were hoping for a bounce-back season. The 36-year-old is hitting an atrocious .213/.273/.264 with one homer and 23 RBI across 238 plate appearances.
Yoán Moncada was not in the White Sox lineup for Sunday's showdown against the Tigers.
Moncada started Sunday's game on the bench as Elvis Andrus filled in a third base against lefty Matthew Boyd. Moncada started the previous five games but will head to the bench after going 1-for-17 with two walks and eight strikeouts during that stretch. Since being activated from the injured list on May 12, the 28-year-old is hitting a dreadful .211/.282/.282 with zero homers and seven RBI and could see more time on the bench if he continues to underperform.
Reds' José Barrero: Out of lineup again Sunday. Barrero was not in the starting lineup versus the Brewers on Sunday. Barrero opened the game on the bench for the third straight game. The25-year-old took a seat again with Will Benson getting the start in center and hitting eighth against Adrian Houser and the Reds.
